Ill Manors Broadcast Platform Concluded

Ill MANORS: BROADCAST PLATFORM CONCLUDED

BBC Radio 1

1) How popular is BBC Radio 1? Find average listening figures for the station. How has the BBC Radio 1 audience declined over recent years? Why might this have happened?
 1. The  number of listeners that listen to BBC Radio 1 are 11 million. The figures have drastically been declining because the use of the internet, namely YouTube, is what is generally used to hear interviews or listen to music.

2) Who is the target audience for BBC Radio 1?

2. The target audience for BBC Radio 1 would be young people, roughly around 17-30 years of age. I would say this because this station features majority modern artists from the music industry. The psychographic group I would associate with BBC Radio 1's target audience are Mainstreamers, this is because the people featured on this radio station are usually mainstream pop artists.

3) How does Plan B promote Ill Manors in this interview?

 3. Plan B promoted Ill Manors through the constant referral to the films release date and music album that came out with it. This made listen aware and made them "save the date". Furthermore, by Plan B showing his dedication in editing the film causes anticipation because he presents himself as working tirelessly to finish the film to the best of his ability.

4) What representation of Plan B can we find in this interview?

4. Plan B is represented as being compassionate and caring for where he was originally brought up as he talks about how the Olympic games have brought attention to the area of East London. He is also represented as being a father figure to the youths around East London as it shows that he cares for them greatly. This is reinforced by how he talks about how he hired some young actors from his a school in East London to show the realism of the film.

The Jonathan Ross, show  aired on ITV on the 3rd of September 2011. It use to be called
'Friday Night With Jonathan Ross' The show later on moved to BBC. A major controversy, which shaped how Jonathan Ross was seen, Jonathan made 'disgusting' remarks on Thatcher when interviewing David Cameron. In the same year Jonathan Ross commented on Fearne's interview with Prince William and Harry in a 'disgusting' way.

2) WHO IS THE TARGET AUDIENCE (PSYCHOGRAPHICS/DEMOGRAPHICS) AND WHY?

The target audience for this show would be in the psychographic group of Explorers and Reformers. This is because an Explorer would like to learn both sides of the ideologies being shown.Whereas, a reformer would only want to listen to this because it subverts the dominant ideologies. in the ages between 30-45 who have kids in their teenage years to protect them and understand them more.

3) AUDIENCE APPEAL FOR SHOW LIKE THESE?
The audience appeal for The Jonathan Ross show would be most likely for comical purposes instead of for serious debates and talks. This is because of the people that are being shown int the clip. Plan B is a controversial artist who made a film about drugs prostitutes and murder. Whereas, Jonathan Ross is a controversial figure for the various comments he made in an interview with Prince Willam.

4) How is PLAN B REPRESENTED?
Plan B is represented as a Intellectual person who wants to make the world a better place for the youths. He is also represented as someone with a kind heart and a good personality, this is shown in his posture and how he interacts with Jonathan Ross.

SBTV Interview

1) What is SBTV? Research the channel and explain how it became successful.
SBTV Global Ltd is also known as S.b.t.v or SmokeyBarz TV, is a company run by a small team of young people who work on web-based music videos or events and then upload them for the whole world to see. The founder, Jamal Edwards, attended Acton High School and started up his company by uploading hand held videos of artists free styling. . As the channel began to attract more attention, it also began offering lifestyle interviews and event coverages. As a result of this  SBTV  became more and more successful as there became many celebrities, such as Chipmunk, Tinchy Stryder and Plan B.

2) Identify the target audience for this interview (demographics/psychographics) and say why.

The target audience that I identified within this interview was mainly teenagers between the ages of 15-20. This is because they are more likely to follow these celebrities on social media as well as listen to their music on youtube. I would have also said this is the target audience as it suggests that the teenagers are the ones who use the internet the most.

3) What is the audience appeal for an interview like this? How does the opening of the clip emphasise this appeal?
The opening of the clip instantly appeals to the teenage audience through the colloquial language used. The use of the swearing means that the youth of our generation can feel like they are in a normal environment. This can allow them to build a relationship with these celebrities. Thus, resulting in getting a personal identification with the audience(Blumlar and Katz).

4) How is Plan B (the brand) represented in this text?
Personally, I think two sides to Plan B are presented. The first side is the negative portrayal of him as a person who swears and has no respect. However, it also portrays himself as the thing he aims to subvert in his movie 'Ill Manors', a 'Chav'. We could argue that his work ethic portrays him as the opposite.  This is due to all the hard work he has put into Ill Manors.

DVD Extras

1) What does this tell us about Plan B's intentions in making the film?
Plan B has variety of
intentions consisting throughout the British film, 'Ill Manors'. However, his strongest intention was to subvert the stereotype that has been placed on council housed teenagers.
Plan B has done this by showing characters in the film who would generally fit the stereotype of "CHAVS", Plan B's interpretation to the word 'chav' are people who are Council Housed And Violent, Plan B than full subverted the stereotype by making it Ed be seen as the cold heartless criminal he is until the point he threw away his life in order to save the babies. Furthermore, another one of his intentions were to show the audience his life as a teenager and how he grew up.

2) What do we learn about the production process for Ill Manors?

Axiomatically, Plan B tells the audience that this art house film was done on a very low budget. We are also told that most of the start up funds for Ill Manors came directly out of Plan B's savings this was because Plan B was hoping to receive a handsome profit. This may have been risky however Plan B was very determined to not let anything stand in his way. Furthermore, in order to make the film look more life like he had to hand pick actors that were "from that life" as he knew a professional actor would not give the exact feel required.

3) What can you tell about the possible target audience from this short documentary?

The initial target audience is mainly the people who were not rioting, and the people who do not appreciate the presence of council housed children. As Plan B was once a council house child himself, the audience instantly assume that the target audience would be people like himself, as that is what is constantly being shown in the film. However the main audience that Plan B attemted to target were the resigned and the succeeders, this is because it is them two psychographic groups that were looking down on the lower class.

4) Does the film successfully do what director Ben Drew (Plan B) set out to achieve?

From what is said in the documentary I can say that Plan B did believe that it completed what he wanted. Ben Drew managed to get real and well known actors(Riz Ahmed and Ed) as well as locatyions that gave a realistic yet natural approach to things.
He was also able to draw his experiences and his childhood which helped shape him to become the director he was. Furthermore, we can say that the film was successful as he said it was the most fulfilling feeling ever.
